Artist Bio
Nicholas Dobson was born in England, raised in Edmonton, earned a BFA in Printmaking at the U Of Alberta and an MFA from the University of Calgary. He has served locally with the Society of Northern Alberta Printmakers (SNAP) and with Latitude 53 Gallery, both artist-run cooperatives, on the boards of directors and as a volunteer member.
He has for many years worked as certified welder in boiler-making/ pipe-fitting in industry and also as printmaking technician and sessional instructor at the U of A. This cross-pollinated and dedicated working history has informed and shaped his imagery in a very unique and personal manner. Earlier work started with industrial imagery transformed through making woodcuts and drawings, mostly graphic black and white with limited colour.
In recent years, Nick has taken imagery from the job-site, photographing, re-imagining, digitizing, adding allusions, and then producing large digital prints. Dobson also makes time consuming sculptures which are fitted with incendiary fuse, then burns and photographs the process as a source of new imagery. Most of the new images make reference to Greek myths, underlining this cross pollination of source material and inspiration.
Dobson is unique in the Alberta art scene for this fusion of industry, industrial material, and fine art; not many welders make art, and not many artists work in industrial workplaces.
Dobson has developed this body of work over the last ten years. He exhibited "merteles" at Modern Painters in September 2015,
and also made an event to ignite one of the sculptures for an enthusiastic opening crowd.
