Biography Jonathan Knowlton was a presence in the Edmonton art scene from the time he came to the University of Alberta in 1966 to teach. Born in New York City, 1937, he earned a BA at Yale University in 1960, and an MA from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1964, studying under Richard Diebenkorn. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied painting and printmaking in Paris, and on returning to SanFrancisco, was recruited by the U of Alberta to set up a printmaking department in the Department of Art and Design. Jonathan was a painter first though, teaching Painting, Drawing, Fundamentals, and Graduate Studies into the 1990's when he retired from the staff. He continued to work independently until passing in 2004 at the age of 67. Knowlton was a 'gifted' painter with an eclectic, versatile repertoire of imagery, often brilliant ideas and skill, moving from abstract Expressionism, 1960's hard edge compositions, to seaside watercolours, to realistic store front windows, "photorealism' car engines, reworking Picasso's Les Demoiselles with a 'Women' series, reworking Vermeer, and an extended meditation on the A-Bomb.
We are honoured to present a wide selection of Jon Knowlton's work from his estate.
